A Milwaukee middle school teacher, who is Black, is under fire for an assignment by which her students were to write a paper defending a Klansman on trial. Damaris Dorsey, whose son attends the Business and Economics Academy of Milwaukee, says she refused to alow her son to work on this assignment.
“To even ask my child to write a paper like this—his mind, level of thinking, is not there yet. I don’t teach him hate,” she said. “So therefore, he does not know the in-depth of the Ku Klux Klan.”
A letter from the teacher at the charter school stated that the assignment came after the class watch the film "To Kill A Mockingbird."
“The goal of this paper is not to teach students the Klan was correct in its behavior, but rather to teach the students how to write persuasively,” the letter stated.
Local community activist Tory Lowe did not feel as though the assignment was neithe age appropriate nor culturally appropriate, stating:
“These are young students, young children,” he said. “This is not law class. If it was a Jewish child, they wouldn’t give him an assignment to defend Hitler.”
While the teacher has been removed from the class pending an investigation, the school is certain the teacher had no malicious intent in her actions.
