A disgusting video went viral on social media on January 4 showing four Black teens assaulting and torturing a homeless, disabled White man. There was a compilation of several Facebook Live videos spanning up to thirty minutes long.
In the videos, the teens taped the victims mouth shut, cut off pieces of his hair, forced him to drink toilet water, then verbally assaulted him while kicking and beating him.
Chicago police initially said this is not a hate crime, despite the fact that the suspects referred to the man's race and made several references to Donald Trump, including shouting "F*ck Trump!" But today, Jordan Hill, 18; Tesfaye Cooper; 18; Brittany Covington, 18; and Tanishia Covington, 24, have each been charged with hate crime, felony aggravated kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
Various groups were clearly upset that this was not immediately treated as a "hate crime." Not only was the man's race bought up during the assault, but the man is also disabled. Crimes against the disabled are also treated as hate crimes.
Black Lives Matter is also up in arms after the hashtag #BLMKidnapping started trending on Twitter thanks to the far-right site "InfoWars". The BLM organization and activists say they have nothing to do with this incident although the teens shouted "Black Lives Matter" during the assault.
A hate crime is one that includes violent acts caused by bigotry or hatred of another race, religion, gender or disabilty. The fact that these four teens shouted several racial remarks and even made the poor choice of shouting "Black Lives Matter", thus involving an organization that doesn't condone violence, should constitute a hate crime. The charges filed today I believe are absolutely appropriate!
I hope the young man assualted in the video is able to recover from this attack and that the four teens, who are in custody, be punished accordingly for what they've done, and LEARN from it!
