In October of 2015, Jodie Burchard-Risch smashed a beer mug into the face of Asma Jama at an Applebee's restaurant while screaming "speak English!"
Jama was enjpying dinner with her family and speaking in her native Swahili language when she was attacked by Burchard-Risch.
Tuesday in court, Jama spoke directly to Burchard-Risch in front of the entire court. Jama stated "What you did to me wasn't good. You should never do anything like that to anyone." Jama also added, "I forgive you", citing her religious beliefs teaching forgiveness.
Burchard-Risch plead guilty to felony third degree assault as part of a plea deal. Light sentences like this will not aid in detouring such hate crimes from happening.
While the rise of Donald Trump can not be solely blamed on the increase of hate crimes in America, I certainly can not deny that more people who have been "keeping their bigot in the closet", have now felt emboldened to make these such attacks. I personally can not fathom witnessing something like this and not responding, particularly if it happened to a family member.
